Independent Custody Visitors are members of the local community who visit police stations unannounced to observe, comment and report on; the rights of the detainee; the health and welfare of the detainee and the conditions of the facilities of detention. Giving the public the chance to offer protection to both, detainees and the police, as well as giving individuals the chance to reassure their local communities and society at large. Devon and Cornwall Police Authority needs more volunteers. Their aim is to develop a volunteer panel which reflects the diversity of the communities they serve. Devon and Cornwall Police have said they would particularly welcome applications from members of all minority groups.
