In the summer of 2008, the children at Broadclyst Traveller site asked if they could have a playground. Their nearest playground was in the local village and to get there they had a 20 minute walk along a fast road with no pavements. Devon County Council, which manages the site, gave permission for a playground, and laid the foundations. Penny Dane then worked with the children to decide what the playground should look like. Once that was done they worked together to put in funding applications. The children explained why they needed a playground, gave details of how many children would use it, what ages they were, and how it would benefit their community. Their applications to Devon Youth Capital Fund, Devon County Council and Devon Community Foundation were successful and in July 2010 the playground was completed
